Milk Thistle (Silybum Marianum) has been used as a liver support supplement for thousands of years. Milk thistle seeds are thought to protect liver cells from toxic chemicals and drugs as well as acting as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.

US National Institute of Health reports that silymarin (NIH):

• stimulates detoxification pathways
• stimulates regeneration of liver tissue
• functions as an antioxidant
• stabilizes cellular membranes

Safety – Milk thistle is considered likely safe when taken by mouth. Milk thistle can have a laxative effect and less commonly can cause nausea, diarrhea, indigestion, intestinal gas, bloating, fullness or pain, and loss of appetite.
